What the Woodcut generator actually changes
- Line Work: Build the entire image from carved marks — bold contour lines, parallel hatching and cross-hatching for midtones, and cleared white areas for highlights
- Ink: Solid opaque black ink with slightly ragged edges where the blade cut, and small imperfections where ink did not fully transfer
- Tone: No smooth gradients — all shading must come from the density and thickness of the carved marks
- Carving Character: Marks should follow the form they describe, curving around cheeks, folds and volumes the way a printmaker would cut them
- Paper: Print onto slightly textured off-white or cream paper with visible fibre and a faint plate impression
- Colour: Follow the chosen style — single black ink, a two-colour reduction print, or the flat layered colour of ukiyo-e

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a woodcut print?
A woodcut is a relief print: the artist carves away everything that should stay white, inks the raised surface that remains, and presses it onto paper. Because ink is either there or not, all shading has to be built from carved lines and cross-hatching rather than smooth gradients.
What is the difference between woodcut and engraving?
A woodcut is cut into the plank with a knife and gives bold, slightly rough marks. An engraving is incised into metal with a burin and gives much finer, more controlled lines. Pick "Rough hand-carved" for the woodcut feel and "Fine line engraving" for the finer style.
Is the Woodcut Image Generator free to use?
Creating an account is free, and you can browse the tool without charge. Generating an image uses AI image credits from a one-time credit pack — there is no subscription and credits never expire.
Do I need to sign in to use this?
Yes, you need a free ImageRoute account to generate images. This lets us queue your request and save your result to your gallery.
How long does it take?
Most woodcut generations finish in about 15–40 seconds, depending on server load.
What kind of photo works best?
A clear, well-lit photo where the subject is plainly visible gives the best results. Avoid heavily filtered, very dark or very low-resolution images.
Can I choose a specific style?
Yes — pick one of the 8 presets, or type your own instruction in the style box. Leave it blank and the AI applies classic black ink woodcut.
Which AI model powers this tool?
